North Kawartha is in Peterborough County midway between the City of Peterborough and the Town of Bancroft. The population is 2,877 and increases by approximately 10,000 during the summer months. It includes smaller urbanized areas such as Apsley, Big Cedar, Burleigh Falls, Glen Alda, Mount Julian, Stoney Ridge and Woodview.
This exquisite township is home to several lakes including Stoney Lake, which is a popular destination for hiking, boating, fishing, and swimming. It is also known for its rugged terrain, which includes the Canadian Shield. Other lakes include Clear Lake, Jack Lake, Julian Lake and Chandos Lake to mention a few.

The rapids are caused by a large granite shelf that spans the width of the river, creating a series of cascading waterfalls and chutes.
